Pigface
Carpobrotus rossii Carpobrotus virescens
Aboriginals traditionally ate Karkalla fruit fresh and dried, and paired the salty, fleshy leaves with meat. Also known as "Bain" (Noongar) or "pigface", this bushfood succulent is native to southern coastal regions. Pink flowers appear in spring and summer. Enjoy the sweet fruit fresh or in jams, jellies and cakes, or paired with seafood in savoury dishes. The gel-like juice from the leaves is used like Aloe Vera.
Plant in full sun or part shade in a well-drained soil (from sandy to clay loam), and water occasionally during the hottest summer months. This plant is the perfect selection for a low maintenance, edible verge plant.
