Naturally found in the riverine rainforest areas of New South Wales and Queensland, this small tree producces large orange fruit with a tangy pulp.
Small, cream-brown flowers appear in November to January, that turn to large, yellow-brown bulbs up to 6cm across in February and April.
Bulbs will split open when ripe and reveal bright red flesh.
The small-leaved Tamarind generally produces fruit from the fourth to fifth year.
The fruit is tart, but refreshing and works well with both sweet and savoury dishes. Recipe favourites include Used for: jams, jellies, sauces, chutneys, spreads and coulis, makes a great accompaniment for cheeses and cold meats too.
