Eucalyptus macrocarpa ssp. elachantha, commonly known as the Small Leaved Mottlecah, is one of the most striking and eye-catching flowering gums in Australia. Known for its brilliant, large flowers that can reach up to 10 cm in diameter, this variety boasts spectacular clusters of bright red blooms with yellow tips that stand out against its silvery grey foliage. These vibrant flowers typically appear in spring and summer, though isolated blooms can pop up throughout the year.
A smaller, more compact variety compared to Eucalyptus macrocarpa ssp. macrocarpa, the Small Leaved Mottlecah grows as a spreading mallee or a small, crooked tree with powdery white branches. Its small, broad leaves are a soft grey-green, giving it a delicate, silvery appearance. The large, woody buds are mealy grey, and once they open, they reveal the striking red and yellow flowers, creating a bold contrast against the plant's pale foliage.
Native to the Geraldton Sandplains and the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia, this species thrives in light, well-drained soils and requires full sun to reach its full potential. Drought-resistant, the Small Leaved Mottlecah is an excellent choice for a low-maintenance garden, adding a splash of color and texture to arid or coastal landscapes.
