One of the most popular Kurumes the ‘Kirin’ is a compact, evergreen, small shrub that has a profusion of small, single, light pink blooms which are on display in spring. Flowers sit amongst beautiful, fine, dark green glossy foliage.
Cultural
Prefers a part shade to full shade position with a well-drained, humus rich soil that is slightly acidic. Is hardy once established. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape, mulch well during extended dry periods and fertilise with an Azalea specific or a complete organic fertiliser in spring and late summer. If flowers are becoming mushy this might be a sign of petal blight, pick off and dispose of then treat with appropriate fungicides. Azaleas are also susceptible to insect attack, treat with appropriate pesticides.
Landscape Uses
Looks fantastic and works well mass planted under trees or as a specimen plant. Great potted in courtyards, entertaining areas or to frame an entrance. Kurumes are often used in Japanese style gardens where they are clipped into gorgeous flowering mounds, plant with other Japanese style plants such as Acer, Camellia, Pieris and Ophiopogan.
