The Little Apple Co has brought out a new apple that?s ideal for the kids, called Sweet Cheeks.

It is grafted on to dwarf rootstock so only grows to no more than 3m high. Sweet Cheeks is the first in a range of dwarf lunch box apples, with blushed yellow fruit that?s sweet and crisp and an ideal size for kids? lunch boxes or a healthy snack.

Like all apples Sweet Cheeks will need a pollinating partner, either Granny Smith, Pink Lady or crabapples. They should be planted at the same time. Without cross pollination you won?t get fruit, however, because bees can travel long distances, if you don?t have room for two apples convince a neighbour to grow the partner.

Plant Sweet Cheeks in full sun in a well-prepared hole with compost, some clay and a wetting agent. You will also need a good-quality, slow-release fertiliser with sufficient levels of potassium, magnesium and iron, such as Grow Safe.

Dwarf apples can be grown successfully in a pot in premium potting mix with added compost and fertiliser. Ensure the pot is on legs for adequate drainage. Liquid fertilise during spring and summer when the fruit is developing.

Sweet Cheeks will start fruiting in summer and ripen at the beginning of autumn. Pick when fruit is fully grown at 7.5cm diameter. Fruit will continue to ripen off the tree so pick apples when still firm.

If you look at the flowers on them they look like small single roses because they are in the same family as roses, cherries, pears and peaches.

If you want to keep apples fresh for longer refrigerate them. They will ripen 10 times faster at room temperature and can be used to ripen green bananas very quickly when put in the same fruit bowl.
