This easily grown plant is attractive in flower and fruit. A very variable species, young plants and plants from drier areas tend to be small-leafed and spiny while those from moister areas tend to have larger leaves and spines may be absent. Occasional old trees to 10 m high are known. It is the food plant of the rare Eltham Copper Butterfly. Aborigines enjoyed the honey in the flowers. The wood was used to make weapons such as the short sticks or waddys. source. "Flora of Melbourne" Marilyn Bull
